INTRODUCTION TO THE FOURTH EDITION
Since the first edition, this manual has served as both a reference and tool for working in and teaching mammalogy. However, with continuing revision of the taxonomy of North American mammals, the third edition contains out-of-date information. My intention with the development of this edition, as was the case with past editions, is to provide an up-to-date comprehensive treatment of all mammal genera, both native and introduced (at least those most likely to be found in the wild), occurring in North America north of Mexico, inclusive of marine mammals found in coastal waters.
